- In certain situations, it may be in the student’s best interest to drop all of their courses in a semester. This is called a resignation.
- Learn more about impacts of resigning:
- Students can email [email protected] to connect with an academic counselor to discuss resignation and initiate a resignation request.
- Students must adhere to university deadlines as outlined in the LSU Academic Calendar.
- Students who resign after the last day to drop without a “W” through the last day to resign of a semester will have “W” grades on their transcript for all courses in which they were enrolled that semester. Specific deadlines are listed in the LSU Academic Calendar.
- Learn more about important semester deadlines:
- University College Video: Using the Academic Calendar
- Office of the University Registrar Website: Academic Calendar
- A “W” grade or withdrawal is a reflection on your transcript that shows you were enrolled in a course, but did not complete the course.
- While LSU students are limited in the number of “W” grades they can earn based on the LSU “W” policy, “W” grades earned when resigning from the university do not count in the number of drops permitted. Therefore, students can still resign for a semester if they have used all allowed “W” grades based on the “W” policy.

- The student must file and have an approved exception with the LOFSA office to regain TOPS eligibility. Students should contact the LOFSA office to discuss this appeal process and eligible exceptions prior to resigning.
