DComm Huddle – While postal mail may be a thing of the past, formal letters are certainly not! And you will no doubt be writing at least one letter of application in the near future when applying for scholarships, awards, internships, graduate schools, jobs, and the LSU DC certification! Letters of application are evaluated critically by the receivers and often can make (or break) your success. **This opportunity is only open to current DComm candidates.

Email Etiquette: becoming a professional – Do you know the difference between the “to” field and the “bcc” field when sending an email? Do you effectively use email subject lines? Do you always proofread your emails for tone and grammar before sending? We will be talking about these things and much more! Yes, email is quick, easy, and a major communication medium for all professions. But this doesn’t mean that all grammar rules go out the window. There are also many genre and etiquette rules to email and you should know them all if you want to successfully correspond with others.

DComm Huddle: Hands-on Portfolio Workshop – Seniors: Your portfolios are due soon, so don’t miss this opportunity to work on your portfolio and share ideas with fellow DC candidates and the CxC staff. Sophomores & Juniors: It’s never too early to start on your portfolio. If you don’t have one yet, this is a great opportunity to see what others are doing and begin planning yours! Basics of Building a Professional e-Portfolio – An e-Portfolio is simply a website highlighting your work. It’s a great way to showcase your skills and talents whether you’re seeking internships, scholarships, jobs, or admission to grad school. Being able to add “check out my work at www…” to your cover letter or email message immediately sets you apart from other students and essentially gets you in the door first. Beginning your portfolio early is key so let’s get started! This introductory seminar will cover the common e-portfolio web tools, the do’s and don’ts of e-portfolio design, and how to select the right work samples for a winning professional e-portfolio.
