Police Officer positions: 

The Louisiana State University Police Department may be accepting applications for the positions of Police Officer 1A, 2A, or 3A for both POST (Peace Officer Standards & Training) certified or Non-POST certified.

The level of positions filled and pay above entry will depend on qualifications of candidates selected.

At time of application, applicant MUST have a passing score of at least 70% for the Protective Services Exam (PSE - series 2100), unless currently occupying a Civil Service position in the LEAPS exam series, with permanent status or re-employment eligibility.  *Please note that as of October 1, 2021, the new Protective Services Exam (series 2100) replaces the 9500-LEAPS (Louisiana Law Enforcement and Protective Services) exam.  

 

  • Police Officer 1A
    No specialized experience or training is required.
  • Police Officer 2A
    One year of experience in law enforcement required.
  • Police Officer 3A
    Two years of experience in law enforcement required.

All applicants must possess a valid Louisiana driver’s license and must have attained their eighteenth birthday at time of application. An applicant who has been convicted of a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge, will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Special requirements: Willingness and ability to perform physically strenuous activities relative to the nature of law enforcement.

Police Officer 1A:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must have attained eighteenth birthday at time of application.

Police Officer 2A: 

  • All criteria for Police Officer 1A, plus: 
  • One year of experience in law enforcement or Military Police in the Armed Forces. 
  • College credits may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience. 

Police Officer 3A:

  • All criteria for Police Officer 1A, plus:
  • Two years of experience in law enforcement or Military Police in the Armed Forces. 
  • College credits may be substituted for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year experience. 

Step 1: Entrance Exam

Protective Services Exam (PSE - series 2100) is a pass/fail exam. Results are emailed within 72 hours of taking the exam. You can only take this exam every 90 days. Your passing score is valid for a period of two years.

Step 2: Job posted on LSU HRM website

Applicant must submit an application to HRM with a passing civil service exam score. Applicant can check LSU Human Resources website for job postings at lsu.edu/hrm/job_seekers.

Step 3: Physical Fitness Assessment

Selected applicants will be contacted to perform a pre-employment fitness evaluation.

Step 4: Oral Interview

Oral interview applicants will receive a phone call or email informing them of their scheduled date for appearance before an oral interview board.

Step 5: Background and Reference Check

A background investigation and Credit History Check will be conducted of all applicants. This phase does not require any action by the applicant. LSU Police Department staff will investigate each applicant’s criminal, driving, and credit history. The applicant’s former employers, neighbors and family may be interviewed. Each applicant must sign a waiver giving LSU Officers permission to conduct a background check and credit history check.

Step 6: Selection of Candidates

Upon completion of the applicant process, applicant information will be assembled in a candidate pool. This information will be reviewed for available positions by members of the selection board. Candidates will then be selected in a nondiscriminatory manner.

Step 7: Interviews of Applicant’s References

The applicant’s friends, family, employers, and neighbors may be visited and interview by LSU Police Department Officers in order to gather more information pertaining to the applicant.

Step 8: Conditional Offer of Employment

Selected applicants will be offered conditional employment pending final review by the Hiring Committee and successful completion of step 9.

Step 9: Medical Examination, Drug Test, Polygraph Examination, and Psychological Evaluation

Candidates will be required to report for a medical exam, drug test, polygraph examination, and a psychological evaluation by a licensed, contracted physician on our staff. 

Step 10: Final Offer of Employment

Selected applicants will be contacted with final offer of employment.

Step 11: Start of Employment

All applicants who accept the final offer of employment will receive information regarding the initiation of employment.

Salary

Police Officer PO-1A – LSU Rate    Hourly: $14.54 –  25.80       Annually: $30,243 – $53,664

Police Officer PO-2A – LSU Rate   Hourly: $15.56 – $27.61     Annually: $32,365 – $57,429

Police Officer PO-3A – LSU Rate   Hourly: $16.65 – $29.54      Annually: $34,632 – $61,443

*All PO-2A, 3A receive an additional $2.00/hour premium pay.

*All officers receive longevity pay at an additional $1.00/hour for 0-2 years of service and an additional $2.00/hour for 2+ years fo service. This includes hours worked for extra duty and overtime.

*All officers receive an additional night shift differential pay at $1.25/hour.

*Any FTO receives an additional $1.50/hour while training another officer.

*Departmental Extra Duty assignments are paid at time and half. 

*Special Event Extra Duty (non-departmental) assignments are paid at time and a half +$25/hour.

Communications Officer positions: 

The Louisiana State University Police Department may be accepting applications for the positions of Communications Officers.

The level of positions filled and pay above entry will depend on qualifications of candidates selected.

At time of application, applicant MUST have a passing score of at least 70% for the 8500-OSE (Office Support Exam), unless currently occupying a Civil Service position in the OSE series, with permanent status or re-employment eligibility.

This position:

  • Provides constant communication services and accesses sensitive law enforcement information for the department, other law enforcement agencies, or authorized personnel. 
  • Operates/monitors multiple radios, computers, and telecommunications equipment specific to the LSU Police Department. 
  • Uses surveillance camera system for LSU PD specific, campus-wide, and satellite locations to assist responding units.
