Advising Process Details
Every Mechanical Engineering Major is required to visit face-to-face with their assigned faculty Academic Adviser once every semester during the span of an Advising Fair period. Failure to do so during the Advising Fair Period will prevent the student from registering into courses for the following academic semester. This only applies to Fall and Spring Semesters and not the Intersessions or Summer.
Academic advising takes place once every semester over a period of time called the Advising Fair. The Advising Fair typically starts within two weeks from the opening of pre-registration and after the course offerings for the following academic semester are made available on line by the LSU Registrar. It extends for approximately two weeks into the pre-registration period, not including University holidays. Advising appointments of 15min duration can be scheduled Monday-Thursday throughout the Advising Fair period typically between 4:30pm and 7:30pm, depending on Academic Adviser availability.
All students majors of Mechanical Engineering are sent an e-mail at their University e-mail address ([email protected]) originating from [email protected] within a week from the beginning of the Advising Fair. This e-mail reminds them to log on to the OnLine Degree Planning and Advising Tool (OLDPAT) using their MyLSU ID and Password to revise their plan of study prior to meeting their Academic Adviser. The home page of the OLDPAT has downloadable documentation on how to do this and how to use OLDPAT.

Students can log on to OLDPAT at any time and use the tool to explore alternative paths to graduation, e.g. if they want to evaluate the consequences of dropping or failing a course in view of prerequisites, which are automatically enforced in the OLDPAT interactive degree planning form.
Availability of the Academic Adviser is communicated through a follow-up e-mail, after the adviser registers their availability. Upon receiving this notification students should log on to the OLDPAT and make an appointment reservation with their adviser. The home page of the OLDPAT has downloadable documentation on how to do this and how to use OLDPAT.
Students should make sure that their Degree Plan is filled out all the way to graduation before they see their adviser. Unless this is done the students are not going to be advised. The home page of the OLDPAT has downloadable documentation on how to do this and how to use OLDPAT.
Please note that the OLDPAT is undergoing continuous development so there may be some glitches, or it may be somewhat slow to respond depending on traffic. We kindly ask for the patience of the user, and kindly request reporting any glitches/errors related to the behavior of the OLDPAT via e-mail to Mr. Syed Irfan.
