July 22, 2014 | LSU Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering

LSU professor Fereydoun ‘Fred’ Aghazadeh, PhD, Georgia Gulf Distinguished Professor, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, received the IIE Fellow Award at the Institute of Industrial Engineering annual conference in June 2014. The award recognizes outstanding leaders of the profession who have made significant, nationally recognized contributions to industrial engineering. A fellow is the highest classification of IIE membership. IIE is the society of Industrial Engineers and represents over 200,000 industrial engineers, of which about 15,000 belong to IIE. Only 10 society members are honored annually as the recipient of this award.

“Professor Aghazadeh is a distinguished scholar and scientist with major national and international reputation whose reputation brings added distinction to the department, college and the university,” said Gavriel Salvendy member of the USA National Academy of Engineering and Professor Emeritus at Purdue University.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) of the neck, upper extremity, and low back are a major cause of lost workdays in the United States. Aghazadeh’s research efforts in ergonomics range from manual materials handling, strength testing, safety, hand tools, work-rest scheduling, and environmental considerations. He has published research results in a variety of journals, including Ergonomics, the Journal of Human Ergology, Occupational Ergonomics, International Journal of Industrial Ergonomics, Human Factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing and Safety, Applied Ergonomics, among others. Aghazadeh joined LSU’s industrial engineering department in 1984 and started an industrial ergonomics and safety engineering program. The Ergonomics/Human Factors program at LSU is the only one in the state of Louisiana. He has conducted 71 presentations at technical conferences and 178 research publications comprising of 84 publications in refereed book chapters and journals, 64 refereed conference proceedings, 30 research reports, book reviews, abstracts, and other publications.
