Bachelor of Music Therapy

The Bachelor of Music Therapy prepares student musicians to become board-certified music therapists through an innovative academic curriculum. 

Students in music therapy will grow their musical knowledge and skills, which they will then seek to integrate into areas of clinical practice and professional growth. Students achieve this competence through rigorous and innovative academic programming in the areas of music studies, music therapy, research, behavioral and social science, and supervised music therapy clinical experiences in a variety of settings and populations of need. 

Under the instruction of prominent music therapy professors, researchers, and clinicians, each student will learn about the principles of music, therapeutic techniques, and applications in classes, while gaining practical experience in clinical practicum with people across a range of lifespans and situations, such as those navigating developmental disabilities, receiving medical treatment, receiving behavioral health treatment, and receiving end-of-life care. 

After completing four years of coursework and 180 pre-internship supervised clinical practicum hours, students will then complete an internship (minimum of 1020 hours) at a site that has an American Music Therapy Association (AMTA)-approved training plan. Once they complete their internship, students are eligible to graduate from LSU.

Finally, the program is designed to prepare students to pass the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) certification exam to obtain the credential Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC).

As of April 2024, this program has been approved by the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), the Louisiana State University Board of Supervisors, and the Louisiana Board of Regents. It is pending accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM).
