Summer Camps
Are you in search of a STEM summer camp that challenges and inspires? Our non-credit two-week camps are tailor-made for students entering grades 9–12 with a curiosity for science, technology, engineering, and math. These camps offer an opportunity to broaden your STEM knowledge and skills while forging lasting connections with fellow aspiring scientists and engineers.
Whether you’re exploring potential areas of study or seeking an immersive experience in a subject you love, our camps offer a unique chance to:
- Experience life at LSU.
- Participate in college-level courses purely for the joy of learning.
- Engage in exciting hands-on projects alongside like-minded peers, LSU graduate students, and faculty.
We are continually developing additional courses for the summer academy, so we encourage you to check back for updates. For a sense of our offerings, here is a list of our lineup from last year.
Ideal for students who might be interested in the following majors:
Computer Science, Mathematics, Civil Engineering, Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, Construction Management
Join us for an exciting week of designing, modeling, and 3D printing unique parts
that bring your passions to life! In this camp, you will use Autodesk® Inventor to
apply the engineering design process to design a solution from scratch. You will then
3D model your design and refine it through multiple iterations. Once you're satisfied
with your creation, you will 3D print it! At the end of the week, you can keep your
files and 3D printed objects as souvenirs of your hard work and ingenuity. Don't miss
this chance to unleash your creativity and bring your ideas to life!
This camp has a $75 classroom supply fee.
Ideal for students who might be interested in the following majors:
Biological Engineering, DMAE, Biological Science, Computer Science & Engineering
Join us for Computational Biology, an engaging project-based course designed to introduce high school students to the world of bioinformatics. Through hands-on activities on computers and laptops, students will learn how to search and retrieve biological data, sort and analyze it, and draw meaningful conclusions. With a focus on molecular biology and real-life medical and biological scenarios, students will gain valuable skills in data analysis and critical thinking. Don't miss this opportunity to explore the intersection of biology and technology!
Ideal for students who might be interested in the following majors:
Digital Media Arts & Engineering, Digital Art, Marketing or Entrepreneurship
Looking to improve your esports skills? Look no further than our Esports Coaching Camp! Designed to help students improve their gaming abilities, this course covers everything from game preparation and analysis to communication and collaboration. Through hands-on experience, students will learn how to analyze game-based statistics and work together to implement tactics derived from the data. With an emphasis on teamwork and communication, this camp is perfect for any student looking to improve their gaming skills. So whether you're an experienced player or just starting out, join us and level up your gaming abilities!
Discover the exciting world of esports beyond just gaming! If you're interested in learning about the different career paths in esports and video game development, as well as how esports teams operate, this is the camp for you. Designed for students entering grades 9-12, this two-week camp offers a unique opportunity to explore college majors related to the game industry and participate in fun games. Don't miss out on this chance to expand your knowledge and passion for esports!
Ideal for students who might be interested in the following majors:
Digital Media Arts & Engineering, Composition Studies
This camp was designed for students who are interested in music and/or sound design—a promising and rewarding career. Students are introduced to a broad range of topics and concepts in electronic and computer music, including:
- industry software and techniques for recording original music.
- recording original compositions for use in a game and a short film.
- a basis for music theory, sound art composition, digital audio sound design/synthesis, and workstations.
- assignments and activities entailing listening, analysis, discussion, and hands-on exercises.
Ideal for students who might be interested in the following majors:
Computer Science & Engineering
In this course, we will cover the basics of JavaScript - one of the most widely-used coding languages available - to learn how to code your own 2D video game. You will program character interactions, set up keyboard controls, add your own soundtrack, and more. At the end of camp, we will have a competition to see who can score the highest on each person's final game. Some programming experience is helpful, but not required.
This course immerses students in real-world scenarios, scientific inquiry, knowledge of human health, and associated consequences of environmental change and challenges. In addition to studying the basic principles of environmental sciences and human disease, students will examine the intricacies and relatedness of these two fields as we navigate an ever-changing world. This course also provides students with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies to contribute scientific discovery and inquiry needed to best serve humanity and the world that surrounds us. By the end of the course, students will be prepared for taking high school biology, AP biology, or AP Environmental Science in the upcoming year.
Ideal for students who might be interested in the following majors: Computer Science
Interactive Computing focuses on the nuances of programming for interacting with the
real world in two representative areas: autonomous robots and the front end of web
applications. Students learn how to code a software model within the realities of
physical hardware, how to write test suites, and how to systematically debug their
programs. Through fun and engaging projects, students will learn programming-based
problem-solving skills, such as teaching robots to navigate mazes and play soccer,
developing online web apps to read sensors and control actuators in greenhouses, and
automating devices at home with Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.
Ideal for students who might be interested in the following majors: Engineering
In partnership with the LSU College of Engineering, Intro to Engineering will introduce you to the profession, ethics and diversity of the engineering field. This experience will allow you to explore the differences between engineering disciplines through guest speakers, tours and hands-on activities. Throughout the program, you will learn and develop skills in problem-solving, communication, decision-making and teamwork.
This camp has a $200 classroom supply fee.
Ideal for students who might be interested in the following majors: Computer Engineering
This course will involve students in the development, building, and programming of robots to accomplish various tasks. Students will perform hands-on work in teams to encourage knowledge sharing, reflection, and review. Topics may include motor speed, gear ratios, torque, sensors, program loops, project documentation, and decision-making.
Ideal for students who might be interested in the following majors: Civil & Environmental Engineering, Agricultural Science, Disaster Science & Management Concentration (Geography)
This camp offers a survey of the fundamental skills used in designing, assembling, and programming drones for indoor use. Student pilots learn flight and signal transmission suitable for flight controller programming and preferential drone mobility. Student teams will ultimately program, test, and pilot their drones competitively within an indoor race course.
