Placement Exam Options for Incoming Freshmen

Fall, Spring, and Summer Testing and Welcome Week incoming freshmen have the option to take placement exams in the following ways:

  • Remotely via ProctorU
    • For Spring Testing and Welcome Week incoming freshmen - Dates TBA.
    • There is a $15.00 fee per exam, please see more details under Option One.
  • On campus at the LSU Testing Center
    • For Spring Testing and Welcome Week for incoming freshmen - Dates TBA in the LSU Testing Center - entrance in the Himes Courtyard. A second set of dates will be available for Welcome Week. 
    • NexGen writing exam can be taken on-site. Dates TBA in the LSU Testing Center - entrance in the Himes Courtyard. A second set of dates will be available for Welcome Week.
    • Please visit our Incoming Freshman Placement Exam page for specific testing time-frames. 
    • There is no fee to take exams on campus, please see more details under Option Two.
    • Go to the Placement Exams website for the Dates TBA; the dates and times will be updated as soon as they are determined.

Additional information:

  • All incoming freshmen have the ability to take these placement exams until the last day to add classes of their first semester. After the last day to add classes, students are no longer considered incoming freshmen and must follow the procedure for continuing students.
  • Students who take a placement exam for a specific subject as an incoming freshmen, are not eligible to take credit by examination for the same subject as a continuing student.

Exam Details

Incoming freshmen may take placement exams only once through either ProctorU or On Campus:  

Incoming freshmen who wish to take their placement exams before arriving to LSU may take their placement exams remotely via ProctorU. There is a $15.00 fee per exam, and students may take each placement exam only once. Please see the information below regarding the process.

1. Create a student account with ProctorU.

  • Go to the ProctorU Portal and select “Sign Up.” Your institution will be pre-populated as “Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge.”
  • Select the Test-Taker button
  • Create profile

2. Schedule your placement exam.

Please Note: At least one (1) business day is required between scheduling and taking a placement exam through ProctorU. The LSU Testing Center office hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

For example: If you schedule an exam at 8:00 p.m. on Friday you will need to schedule the placement exam instance for the following Monday after 8:00 p.m. to allow the LSU staff to open access to the exam within ProctorU. If you schedule before this time, you will not have access to the exam and will need to reschedule.

3. Prepare for the Placement Exam in ProctorU

  • Please refer to the ProctorU Test Taking Student Guide for detailed information on preparing to take your placement exam within ProctorU.
  • Students need to ensure their computer equipment works and they have downloaded the ProctorU extension.

4. Take the Placement Exam in ProctorU

  • There are several steps students will need to complete when taking an exam in ProctorU. For additional information about what to expect on the day of your placement exam please refer to the ProctorU Exam Day resource.
  • Once you have started your ProctorU remote exam session and have completed the academic integrity security scan. students will be prompted to launch the web browsers for their exam.
  • All placement exams (except for Spanish) will be launched in the Questionmark software. Students then will log in by clicking “Log in with my organization credentials” and use their LSU username and password to sign in.

5. Obtain Placement Exam Score

  • After you take the placement exam in ProctorU, you will see your score. Your score will also be processed by the Office of Testing and Evaluation Services (OTES) within three business days. If a satisfactory score is achieved, the course credit will be applied to your student record.

6. Course Scheduling

There is no cost for students to take placement exams on campus, however students may take each placement exam only once. Students will schedule their exams using RegisterBlast.
