Pre-Nursing (PNURS) Advising Guide

This guide is intended to assist LSU Pre-Nursing students who plan to apply to the LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing Traditional Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing Program. It is the responsibility of students interested in attending other nursing schools to contact that school directly to determine admission and application requirements as these may vary from school to school.

Required Prerequisite courses for LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing (LSUHNO-SON) (37 credit hours total):

Courses in first chart with purple header (16 credit hours) must be completed by application deadline (before applying) to lsuhno-son, with 3.0 Minimum GPA, a “B-” or better in science courses and a “C-” or better in non-science courses:

Additional required courses below (21 credit hours) must be completed before starting lsuhno-son. These courses must be completed with 3.0 Minimum GPA, a “B-” or better in science courses, and a “C-” or better in non-science courses:

Note: 

  • Students may complete a third General Education Humanities course at any level prior to attending LSUHNO-SON. If not completed at LSU, students will complete this course once accepted and enrolled at LSUHNO-SON.
  • Statistics 3000 level or above may be transferred if a grade of “C-” or better is achieved. 

 LSU Health Sciences New Orleans School of Nursing Application Process

The Traditional BSN program admits students in the fall and spring each year. The fall semester application deadline is January 15th. The spring semester application deadline is August 1st. Class size is limited and admission is very competitive. Please refer to the “Admission Criteria” web-page for further information about qualifications and requirements. FALL application period is: (August 16th - January 15th) and SPRING application period is: (January 16th – August 1st)

NursingCAS Application 

LSUHNO-SON participates in a Centralized Application Service for Nursing Programs www.nursingcas.org (NursingCAS).   Applicants applying to the Traditional BSN program will apply on-line using the NursingCAS application. To learn more about the NursingCAS application process and to fill out the application, please visit the NursingCAS web site at www.nursingcas.org.

Application Form 

Visit the NursingCAS website at www.nursingcas.org to complete the on-line NursingCAS application. Search for LSU Health Sciences Center School of Nursing in New Orleans, LA. If an applicant has any concerns about the on-line application and needs technology support, please contact the NursingCAS support staff by email: [email protected] or phone: 617-612-2880. 

Application Fee

A required $50.00 application fee is required at the time of application submittal. The applicant will receive a follow-up email from the LSUHNO-SON Office of Student Services/Affairs with further instructions regarding fee submission.

HESI Admission Assessment Exam A2 

Visit nursing.lsuhsc.edu/bsn/admission.aspx for important HESI information and links.

The HESI Admission Assessment exam A² from Evolve Testing & Remediation is required by LSUHNO-SON. 

  • The exam must be taken by the application deadline.
  • A minimum cumulative score of 80% is required.
  • An applicant may take the HESI twice during an application period and must wait six (6) weeks between exams.
  • LSUHNO-SON will take the most recent score.
  • The applicant must re-test if the latest score is greater than one (1) year.
  • When submitting scores, the LSUHNO-SON school code is 198306. 

Transcripts

Visit nursing.lsuhsc.edu/bsn/application.aspx for detailed information on transcripts.

Official transcripts from a regionally accredited college or university must be submitted to NursingCAS. 

  • LSUHNO-SON will allow two (2) weeks after the deadline for NursingCAS to upload and verify coursework.
  • If transcripts are not uploaded by the extended two (2) weeks, the application will be incomplete and ineligible to be processed.
  • LSUHNO-SON encourages applicants to submit the application and forward official transcripts to NursingCAS at least three weeks prior to the deadline to ensure timely processing.
  • Only required prerequisite coursework must be inputted within NursingCAS.
  • An applicant may check the application status through the NursingCAS system.

LSUHNO-SON will recognize up to a combined nine (9) hours Accelerated Program (AP) and CLEP coursework. Official AP and/or CLEP transcript must be sent to the School of Nursing. Nine (9) hours of advanced standing credit will be recognized if earned from the college/university.

Written Statement 

Only qualified applicants meeting all admission criteria will be invited to complete the written statement portion of the application process. Visit nursing.lsuhsc.edu/bsn/admission.aspx for more information on the written statement. 

A proctored essay will be administered at the School of Nursing. The applicant will be given 30 minutes to write about a topic. Instructions will be forthcoming to all eligible applicants.

Interview

Only qualified applicants meeting all admission criteria will be invited to complete the interview portion of the application process.  Visit nursing.lsuhsc.edu/bsn/admission.aspx for more information on the interview process.

The interview will be completed and submitted on-line by the applicant. Instructions will be forthcoming to all eligible applicants.

Previous Nursing Program

If an applicant has attended a previous nursing program, a letter of academic good standing must be provided from that school of nursing.

Notes

  • Meeting the minimum academic requirements DOES NOT guarantee admission to LSUHNO-SON.
  • An applicant may apply to only one LSU School of Nursing BSN program at a time.
