Steele Wins LPLG Advisor of the Year Award

May 18, 2021

Adrienne Steele headshotBATON ROUGE, LA – LSU Assistant Director of Student Programs & Outreach Adrienne Steele was recently honored with the Love Purple Live Gold Award for Advisor of the Year.

Steele, who runs the Society of Peer Mentors (SPM) program in the College of Engineering, was nominated by an SPM member who said, “Whenever we ask her for advice on a big decision, she always helps us to see all sides of the issue and come to an informed decision. She is willing to answer any question without judgement. Many students often seek her guidance for organization-related decisions, but her wisdom extends to academics, as well as personal advice.”

According to the LPLG campaign, advisors are team builders who foster relationships among a group of strangers. They provide guidance and support while encouraging the group to achieve goals, but most importantly, advisors volunteer their time to an organization outside of their regular day-to-day responsibilities.

As leader of SPM, Steele teaches students how to become mentors and leaders in the College of Engineering. SPM’s goal is to help students transition to LSU and the college through a variety of activities and programs. Activities include K-12 outreach, robotics mentoring, and freshmen mentoring through camps and classes. Each spring, SPM hosts two leadership training workshops that bring in guest speakers and train SPM members to improve their communication skills.

During the 2020 fall semester, 83 LSU Engineering students served as SPM leaders for the first virtual Geaux Engineering program.
