Biography

Dr. Senlin Chen is a Helen “Bessie” Silverberg Pliner Professor in the School of Kinesiology (SOK). Dr. Chen’s research is focused on physical education curriculum intervention; youth physical activity, fitness, and health promotion; achievement motivation in physical activity settings; and behavioral and social determinants of health. Dr. Chen’s research has been funded by National Institutes of Health (NIH), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Louisiana Department of Health (LDH), Louisiana Board of Regents, Society of Health and Physical Educators (SHAPE), and many other sources (> $4.5million dollars). Dr. Chen’s research findings have been disseminated in numerous scholarly journals and conferences. Due to his excellent contributions to research, instruction, and service, Dr. Chen has received many awards including the LSU Distinguished Faculty Award, CHSE Distinguished Research Award, SHAPE Joy of Effort Award, etc.. As a scholar, Dr. Chen has provided leadership and service to prominent journals such as JTPE, JSHS, MPEES, Biomedical Research International as guest editor, associate editor, editorial board member, and ad hoc reviewers; and professional organizations as Chair or executive board members (e.g., AERA SIG93, SHAPE CSPAP SIG, ICSPAH). Over the years, he has served as a scientific reviewer of several NIH study sections and the Hong Kong Research Grants Council. Professor Chen is dedicated to excellent teaching and mentoring. His instructional style centers on student-first and has always received excellent student evaluations. As a PI, he currently directs the Pedagogical Kinesiology Laboratory (PK Lab) where many funded research projects have been conducted. Outside work, Dr. Chen enjoys engaging in health-enhancing physical activities (e.g., weight training, tennis, golf, cycling, running) and is an enthusiastic LSU Tigers fan. Geaux Tigers!
